Red Splendor Crabapple

In the temperate regions of North America, Europe, and Asia, a rich diversity of crabapple types flourishes, with as many as 800 varieties freely hybridizing from 20 to 30 species.

The cultivated varieties exhibit a wide range of characteristics, including tree size, flower and fruit colors, as well as growth and branching habits. One notable variety, ‘Red Splendor,’ hails from Minnesota and reaches a height of 15 to 25 feet, showcasing an open, upright habit.

The crown is characterized by its open, rounded, and spreading form. The leaves of ‘Red Splendor’ are a dark reddish-green, transitioning to a reddish-purple hue in the fall. This particular variety follows an alternate bearing pattern, producing a profusion of bloom every other year. The tree graces the landscape with rose-pink flowers, and its distinctive feature is the persistence of vibrant red fruits.
